July Cord Blood Awareness

I've heard about Cord blood banks before when I was still pregnant with my little boy. I receive lots of flyer's from the clinics and in the mail about this company called Cryo-Cell who can preserve newborns umbilical cord blood stem cell to treat serious medical diseases. It was pretty interesting but I am not too sure about it before so I didn't do it. I remember when my mom give birth to my youngest brother she save the umbilical cord and put it in the white cloth, tied it and hang it in the ceiling. Why? Because its a Filipino beliefs to make the baby healthy and safe from any sickness. Actually I didn't do that either.

Today while I was browsing online I found out that this July is a cord blood awareness month. And got more information about the Value of Cord Blood that it is really real in treating diseases with stem cells. Here are some of the few facts I found about cord blood:
(1) Umbilical cord stem cells are known to treat 70 diseases, including leukemia, anemia, lymphoma, diabetes and cerebral palsy,
(2) About 30,000 people a year in the United States are diagnosed with a disease that can be treated with cord blood stem cells,
(3) By the year 2015, there will be 10,000 cord blood transplants world-wide per year using publicly banked cord blood
(4) Cryo-Cell is one of the world’s largest and most established family cord blood banks with over 150,000 clients worldwide.

Now that I got lots of info about cord blood banking, I sure will do it on my next baby. This is reality so mom's and mom's to be check this out.
